Tarka fished very hard and the 18 competitors struggled for bites, Martin Turner only caught a few roach on the pole but managed to find 3 carp on the banded pellet on a straight lead on peg I for 1st place .A single late carp and a bream on the pole on peg M was enough for 2nd spot for Ian, 3rd and 4th places were also single carp on the pole for Plymouth members John and Dell. We hope to make this an annual fixture.

LAST CAST – Seasons End
The last week of the salmon the salmon season brought promise of some tail end sport following on from heavy rain that swelled all the local rivers. It was indeed great to see a decent flow after the long summer drought.
I made a couple of visits to the middle Torridge and failed to tempt a salmon. I was beginning to question my fishing ability until we attended the annual Egg Box dinner at the Half Moon at Sheepwash. Several of the guests had been out fishing and the majority had nothing to report.
Good news came from Little Warham Fishery where four salmon had been tempted. I believe the total for the week on the Torridge was up around eight salmon.
On the Taw several anglers fared better with nine salmon from the Weirmarsh and Brightly beats.
Richard Johns caught three of 10lb, 8lb and 8lb. Edd Oldrey landed a 10lb salmon, G.Nichol a brace of 10lb and 8lb. Chris Steer an 8lb salmon and Richard Jewell a salmon of 5lb.
Several were also caught from beats further upriver. Reports from the Taw are always harder to obtain as much of the river is privately owned.
The Egg Box dinner at the Half Moon Inn saw over fifty River Torridge Fishery Association members in attendance who all enjoyed a delicious meal. This is always a warm and friendly occasion with plenty of fishing talk reminiscing and hope for future seasons. The raffle and dinner raised well in excess of £1000 to invest in river projects including the hatchery that has enabled the stocking of thousands of swim up fry over recent seasons.

Upper Tamar Pallatrax carp pairs
Woods and Ford win the Upper Tamar Pallatrax carp pairs and scoop £2000……
Nigel Woods and Richard Ford from Launceston, Cornwall, won the Pallatrax carp pairs competition at Upper Tamar Lake on the 28-30 September. They chose peg 6 which was a shallow peg and fished really well over the weekend to land 5 carp for 72lbs 10oz to scoop the £2000 top prize.
Karl and Alfie Yates (Bude) were second winning £1000 with 4 fish for 52lb 9oz and Allan Jones and Matthew Pepperell (Bude) were third winning £500 with 4 fish for 46lb 8oz.
The largest fish of the weekend was Richard Ford with a 20lb 5oz mirror carp

Inter-club match Bude Canal Angling Association versus North Devon Match Group Results BCAA 140-5 points NDMG 112-5 pts After 2 legs the teams tied on points 276-5, As holders NDMG retain the cup.

Stiff, cold westerly sea breeze made for some tricky fishing conditions, Christopher Morris NDMG fished the tip and waggler on the top basin for a terrific winning weight. 2nd and 3rd places were decided on the bottom basin,where both team captains Simon John Allen and Martin Turner battled it out on adjoining pegs. Bude’s captain came out on top and helped his team secure a clear victory on the day.
Sea Angling Round Up
Prospects are excellent for the next few weeks with a wide variety of species to target. Bass, grey mullet and flounder should provide sport on lighter tackle with conger, tope and ray for those using heavier beach rods. Ali Laird caught this hard fighting 24lb 8oz tope from a North Devon Rock mark it is his second of the year. Ali lost another tope that picked up a spider-crab and squid cocktail chomping through 80lb mono!
(Below)Dan MIles Redmore enjoyed a successful session on one of North Devon’s local beaches catching six small eyed ray to just over 7lb & a blonde 11lb 10oz.

COMBE MARTIN SAC – The Big Fish off result!
Jonathan Stanway has won Combe Martin Sea Angling Clubs Summer Lure Competition BIG FISH OFF with a bass of 31cm.
The fish off was organised following the two month long lure fishing competition resulting in a draw for the runner up spot with Jonathon Stanway, Ross Stanway and Daniel Welch all catching bass of 55cm. The Lure competition was won by Danny Watson of High Street Tackle who kindly donated the prize of a top quality HTO Nebula Lure Rod to the runner up.
Dan Welch sent me this write up on an enjoyable afternoon at a well known North Devon headland.
“Awesome weather and company including a number of seals but the fishing was slow despite trying various hard and soft lures including surface and sub surface lures. Bright clear conditions meant we were all hopeful of some surface lure action but only one fish took a surface lure. A lot of ground was covered fishing deep kelp covered gullies and I think we nearly killed Danny with the amount of walking and rock hopping we did. The winning fish was caught on a bright green size 4 fiiish lure. Danny also caught on a small pachinko surface lure. Despite a number of garfish following various lures the were no signs of other fish. Despite the lack of fish it was a great afternoon.”
Salmon Season End of season flourish
After one of the worst salmon and sea trout fishing seasons for several years it is good to report on a few fish as longed for rain brought a significant rise in both the Taw and Torridge. I expect to get a more details of fish from the Torridge when I attend the end of season Egg Box Dinner at the Half Moon but below are few images of fish caught in the last week of the season.
