“So what a night. Trip to a local beach a packet of 10 large sandeel and 5 joey mackeral in my bucket resulted in 14 fish. Non stop done right in now. 13 small eyed ray 8lb 1oz new pb from shore 7lb 14oz 6.3 6.1 5.14 5.13 5.10 the best plus an autumn codling fantastic trip local in north Devon. Between 3 of us 20 ray 5 bass and a sole. “

The rough weather has encouraged a few ray to move close inshore with small eyed ray, spotted ray and blonde ray tempted.
RAY ON A WET AND WINDY NIGHT
Autumn nights give the chance of a wide range of species with ray, tope, conger, bass and Huss all on the agenda. Shaun Quartly fished a wet and windy night at a popular Ilfracombe mark and caught a small eyed ray of 8lb 10oz.
Bumper ray session off Minehead
Combe Martin SAC Member Rob Scoines enjoyed an action packed day on Steve Webber’s boat Osprey off Minehead landing 56 rays between the party. Rob boated eleven small eyed ray biggest 9lb13oz and 9lb10oz there were 5 rays over 10lb along a few bass and conger.
Simon is delighted with blonde ray
Simon McCarthy was delighted to land this 12lb 10oz blonde ray from a North Devon Surf Beach. It has been an excellent season for ray on North Devons beaches with several blonde ray among the small eyed ray.
PUTSBOROUGH COMPETITION 2019
Combe Martin SAC’s annual Open competition at Putsborough sands is a popular event in the local angling calendar. The weather is looking ideally set for a good nights fishing. Small eyed ray are top of the agenda and with the amended dogfish specimen size anyone catching ray or bass will be well rewarded with a splendid array of prizes on the prize table from the clubs sponsors Sakuma, High Street Tackle and Chillcheaters.
This is a catch and release competition with all fish weighed and witnessed before being released. Remember that only one bass can now be retained per day for the table.

Spring ray bring hope of summers nights ahead
Dan Waklbridge was delighted to catch this small eyed ray from a North Devon beach as dusk and low water coincided. Such catches bring optimism that results will be good in the popular forthcoming Putsborough Open.

Stunning specimen brace for Mark Jones
Combe Martin SAC Member Mark Jones landed a stunning brace of specimen fish during his latest shore fishing session. Mark landed a personal best small eyed ray of 13lb 2oz and followed it with a huge bull huss scaling 13lb 6oz.
In addition to the big ray Mark also landed five smaller ray. He was joined by Craig McCloughlin of Braunton baits who landed a brace of small eyed ray to around 9lb and a spotted ray.
SEA ANGLERS ENJOY SPRING SPORT
Spring is often a difficult time for sea angling but as the warm sun breaks through optimism rises and in these changing times its worthwhile getting out and seeing whats about. Toby Bassett fished Ilfracombe Pier and was rewarded with a plump codling. There are also a few whiting showing and some dabs from those sandy marks.
Grey mullet are also starting to show at their old haunts taunting angler’s as they boost their reputation as elusive wily grey ghosts of the coast. If you want to learn more about mullet I suggest you seek out the excellent book “Fishing For Ghosts” – Successful Mullet Angling by Mike Ladle and David Rigden.
Combe Martin SAC member Ali Laird headed up-Channel and was rewarded with a brace of ray including a spotted ray of 3lb 3oz and stunning specimen small eyed ray of 11lb 2oz.
