Exe Valley Re-opens

Nick and Sue Hart announce the reopening of this delightful Fly Fishery close to Dulverton.

Anchor Lake is once again open for fishing.  The fishery have received several inquirers from anglers keen to fish and have therefore opened the doors in time for the weekend.

Please note that there is weed present in the lake although the algae situation is much improved.  Dry flies and top water tactics will be needed, long leaders tied to goldheads and heavy lures will result in frustration rather than good fishing!

We advise that all anglers check the lake prior to making a decision to purchase a permit (which must be paid for prior to fishing), please see the relevant rules and details regarding the current conditions in the permit hut.  A fresh stocking will take place in time for bank holiday weekend.

(Above) A fin perfect 7lb plus rainbow caught just before the fishery closed due to prolific weed growth triggered by the hot summer.

As cooler air moves in with rain and wind small stillwater’s will start to fish well. A dry daddy long-legs could well be the pattern to try with weed still problematic to anglers who fail to adapt to conditions.

Upper Tamar Carp – Topped by the Peach

We are delighted for Aaron Bunning who has put a lot of time in at Upper Tamar over the years and is reaping the rewards now. Aaron has been catching plenty of fish recently and landed ‘The Peach’ at 29lb 2oz . Down in weight but we anticipate this will go up again now. Aaron caught the fish within 10 minutes of putting his rods out and was delighted with the capture. Aaron also had two other stocked mirrors, one at 18lbs and one just over 20lbs. Nash Scopex Squid Wafters did the trick over a bed of 1kg of the same boilies. Well done Aaron…..

Ashley Bunning has had a cracking session on Upper Tamar last week with 7 fish to 21lb 4oz. The silver Mirror went 21lb 4oz with the remainder all being chunky mid to high double commons. Nash Scopex Squid Fluoros over a bed of matching freebies did the trick for Ashley….

Many thanks once again to Martin Turner for his latest report from the North Devon match Group.

1st Martin Turner  38lb 1oz

2nd John Lisle 35lb 1oz

3rd Paul Elworthy 29lb 10oz

4th Neilsen Jeffery  26lb 7oz

5th Stuartshelly Burridge 13lb 11oz .

Conditions proved to be challenging for the 12 competitors, driving rain made fishing uncomfortable, despite this some good nets were taken. Martin came out tops with a net of sizeable skimmer ,roach and hybrids from peg 4 on the roadside. He took most of his fish on caster on the long pole over hemp and groundbait in 15ft of water. John took 2nd spot with a feeder caught net from peg 12 on the grass bank at the end of the dam. Johns, mainly skimmer net, fell to pellets and corn. Paul had a slow start on peg 3 but eventually caught 20 skimmers plus some big eels on the cage feeder on maggot for third just pipping Neilsen who’s 4th place on the windswept dam peg 10 of also included a large eel and some lovely rudd.

Smashing it – bass on top

I enjoyed a couple of hours wondering a rocky North Devon shore line with the lures. The windy conditions proving a good test for my recently acquired Snowbee Raptor rod and reel. I had loaded the reel with Sufix Braid that has a breaking strain of 26lb and diameter of 10lb b.s. I had also purchased a couple of Patchinko surface lures and had decided I would give these a fair trial.

The trek to the mark was punctuated with fishing chat with my fishing buddy Rob Scoines who had also been tempted by the Patchinko‘s at High Street Tackle. On arrival at the first section of coast we were met with a very strong westerly breeze. The water however looked perfect with good clarity and a little fizz created by the strong wind. On went the lures and out into the head wind. The Patchinko sailed out surprisingly well with the thin braid cutting through the wind. On the second cast the water erupted as a bass slashed at the lure. No contact this time but the next cast brought a repeat performance and this time a small bass of close to a pound.

Twenty five yards away I heard an excited call from Rob who had also missed a bass. The next twenty minutes saw a few missed takes but no hook ups. With the wind strength climbing we decided to head for a more sheltered area. Hopping across the boulders casting here and there we made our way along the shoreline. I clambered up on a high boulder flicked the lure and started an erratic retrieve. A big swirl behind the lure first cast. Next cast another swirl; third cast and wallop a good solid take and a good scrap as a bass of between three and four pound battled for freedom. After a quick picture I slipped the silver prize back into her home.

The next stop casting out around forty yards Rob and I caught a steady succession of school bass to just over a pound. All on the Patchinko.

Before coming out I had carried out an experiment showing Pauline a Patchinko and a cheaper copy. “Which one would you take if you were a bass” I asked? Obviously sharing the bass’s expensive taste Pauline selected the genuine article at close to £20 instead of the £5.99 alternative.
