Combe Martin SAC member Ross Stanway enjoyed a wrasse fishing session with his son Charlie they tempted several topped by this fine fish of 4lb 7oz. ( Below)
(Below) John Shapland tempted this specimen thin lipped grey mullet of 4lb 1.5oz.
Smoothound are still producing good sport from marks along the coast with several good specimen tempted to just under 10lb.
Sea Angling sport update
Sea anglers are enjoying mixed sport along the coast with bass, mullet and smoothound. It is also good to hear reports of a few mackerel and herring from the boats.
(Below)Nick Job enjoyed a good night fishing with his mate Ian Hooper targetting smoothound they landed several hounds the best this fine specimen of 12lb 4oz. Ian landed hounds to 8lb 13oz.
(Below) Nick Phillips was targetting grey mullet when this 7lb 12oz bass seized his bread hook bait.

Daniel Welch took his daughter Effie fishing for grey mullet and they both enjoyed success with Dan landing the above mullet of 4lb 4oz whilst his daughter enjoyed success with a nice mullet of 3lb 3oz.
Sea Angling Sport – Exceptionally good!
Sea angling sport really seems to be taking off at the moment with a wide range of species being caught by anglers along the coast from both boat and shore. Shore anglers are enjoying some exceptional sport with smoothound and even a few early tope. Float-fishing is producing garfish and the occasional mackerel from marks in the Ilfracombe area along with some quality pollock. Several bass have been tempted by lure anglers who are relishing the clear water opportunities. Thin Lipped grey mullet are present in the estuary’s.
(Above)Cameron Atkinson enjoyed a great day afloat on a Private boat catching plenty of small bass and some decent pollock with the best one falling to Cameron weighing 7lb to set a new personal best for the species.

Smoothound Sport Continues
Ian Hooper and Nick Job enjoyed a session from a North Devon Shore Mark beaching several hard fighting hounds on calm sunny evening.
SEA ANGLING ROUND UP
It seems that summer fishing is on its way with smoothound moving into their summer haunts and putting bends in anglers rod at last after what has been a difficult spring. There have also been a few bass tempted from marks around Ilfracombe with fish tempted on lures in the clearing water.

1st Andrew Clements wrasse 4 lb 9oz 91.250%
2nd Terry Dymond smooth-hound 8 lb 8oz 85%

Appledore Shipbuilders Rover
Smoothound dominated the results for Appledore Shipbuilders with Michael Toogood securing top spot with a fine hound of 14lb 2.75oz.

3rd Jazza John smoothound 9lb 1/2oz
Junior angler Jack Pike set a new Junior Club Record with a hound of 13lb 7 5/8oz.
The coming weekend sees Combe Martin SAC hosting the annual Putsborough beach open. The warmer condtions should have brought small eyed ray into the shallows where they feed primarily on sandeels.

In Search of Spring Ray – Its always lucky to be there on a night like that!

A few fish about!
March and April are generally quiet months out on the coast but there are always a few fish to be found and its often good to just be out there in the fresh air. Combe Martin SAC member Ross Stanway fished an Ilfracombe Rock mark with his young son Charlie and they both tempted shore rockling with Ross landing a new personal best of 13.5oz. Between them they landed pollock, dogfish and rockling.
There should be very chance of bull huss from rough ground marks and the fisrt ray should be showing from local surf beaches.
Sea Angling News and prospects
Sea anglers are certainly having a lean time with just three fish weighed into Bideford Angling Clubs Monthly Rover. Dick Talbot dominated the results with a brace of wrasse for first and second weighing 3lb 13oz and 3lb 6oz. Andrew Clements took third spot with a spotted ray of 3lb 1/4oz. In Appledore Shipbuilders Rover the eighteen competing anglers failed to find a fish big enough to bother the scales. Several members of the club ventured to south coast venues in search of plaice where they enjoyed some success but none above the qualifying weight for the scales.
As temperatures start to creep up fishing should improve and the first bass should soon be caught from the lower estuary. The local surf beaches will produce ray that move inshore to feed on sandeel in the surf. Grey mullet are already present along the coast and the first thin-lipps should be in the estuary’s as soon as the flood water subsides. Rough ground marks on the coast will yield bull huss and the occasional conger.
Anglers fishing Ilfracombe Pier with small worm baits can expect plaice and dabs.
Dogfish will provide plenty of rattles on the rod tips.
In search of spring ray
As spring sets in there is a good chance of catching an early ray from our local surf beaches. Steve Dawe shared these fine images of the sun setting as he waited the onset of darkness and chance of a ray. Whilst he blanked on this occasion the scene certainly illustrates that there is more to this fishing than just catching fish.
