Bideford Anglers Brave the storm in Festive Competition

Thirty five anglers braved hostile conditions to compete for an array of fine prizes in Bideford and District Angling Clubs Christmas Open.

Eighteen flounder were brought to the scales.

Winner of the competition was Ian Hooper with a fine Torridge Estuary flounder scaling 1lb 73/4oz. In runner up spot Terry Dymond with a flounder of 1lb 13/4oz and third J. Andrew with a flounder of 1lb 11/2oz. In fourth was Paul Burslem with a flounder of 1lb 1/8oz and fifth P. Allin with a flounder of 1lb 3/4oz.

Tommy Taylor took the top two places in the Junior section with two flounder of just under 1lb.

Flounder Competition Results

The flounder competition season is in full swing with North Devon Anglers enjoying sport on both the Taw and Torridge Estuaries. Mark Beer took top spot in Triple Hook Clubs Flounder Open with a flounder scaling 1lb105/8oz. In runner up spot was John Passmore with a flounder of 1lb 75/8oz.

Thirty-Seven anglers braved the weather to compete in Bideford Angling Clubs Cyril Petherick Memorial Competition, Congratulations to junior angler Tommy Taylor who caught the biggest flounder of the day a fine specimen of 1lb 14oz. Top senior angler was Robert Bowden with  a flounder of 1lb 113/4oz. Second was Darren Short with flattie of 1lb 111/4oz and third Nick Job with a flounder of 1lb 91/2oz. Tommy Taylor also took runner up in the junior section with a flounder of 151/2oz. The pool winner for the flounder closest to 1lb 4oz was Darren Burslem with a flounder of 1lb 31/4oz.

Estuary Sport on Light Tackle

Flounder enthusiasts are enjoying some good sport on light tackle with quality flounder from all the regular estuary marks. Combe Martin SAC Ian Laird landed several to 1lb 7oz in a recent session.

CMSAC   member Rob Pearson also targetted the flounder landing 10 to 1lb 14oz along with a fine bonus bass of 7lb.

Estuary Sport

Robbie Hancock secured the Triple Hook Clubs RBL Shield with a flounder scaling 1lb 111/2oz. Dennis Toleman took runner up spot with a flounder of 1lb 2oz. Large amounts of floodwater and associated debris made fishing difficult though several flounders were landed by non club members over the weekend. I would expect flounder fishing to

Mixed bags for sea anglers

Ian Laird landed this 9lb 15oz bull huss whilst fishing a local rock mark. The fish was part of a haul that consisted of smoothound, dogfish and pollock.

(Above) This 3lb 6oz codling was tempted by Chay Boggis from a local beach whilst targetting bass.

Ali Laird fished the estuary to land nine flounder to 1lb 9oz. Flounder fishing should be good for the next few weeks with heavy rain flushing out the river.

November can be an exciting time for sea anglers with a vast range of species to target. A big squid or mackerel bait presented on a pennel rig is likely to bring rewards from deep water marks all along the coast. Make sure you use a substantial hook length to withstand sharp teeth. I use a minimum of 80lb b.s mono or fluorocarbon for my shore fishing with a heavy wire trace if tope are a possibility, contrary to popular opinion.

Triple Hook Club- Ladies and Juniors Open Result

Triple Hook Clubs Ladies and Junior Open on Sunday October 29th saw several flounder brought to the scales with calm conditions and blue skies prevailing throughout the morning.

Ian Cairns won the event with a flounder of 1lb 31/2oz and topped the club members section.

In runner up spot was Max Chapple with a flounder of 1lb 33/8oz and third Levi Beer with a flounder of 1lb 31/4oz

The Ladies Event was won by Levi Beer with her flounder of 1lb 31/4oz and Joan Cairns was runner up with a flounder of 145/8oz

Triple Hook Flounder Open – Result

Mark Hancock won Triple Hook Clubs first flounder Open of the season with a flounder scaling 1lb 43/4oz. In runner up spot was Dave Mock with a flattie of 1lb 1oz and in third Dennis Toleman with a flounder of 151/2oz.

    Please note there will be no booking in on the day

    Must be back and present fish at weigh in by 2pm at rear of Ex-Serviceman and Social Club (formerly Royal British Legion), St.Georges Road, Barnstaple

     

    Boundaries – Iron Bridge at Rock Park, Barnstaple to The White House, Crow on either side of the River Taw

    Flounder must be at least 12” with prizes for the heaviest fish weighed in, only heaviest fish per angler counts

    Maximum 2 rods per angler with total of 3 hooks. Juniors (6 – 16 years) must be accompanied by an adult

    Decision of the Weighmaster is final

Flounder fishing beneath a setting sun

The tranquil Taw estuary bathed in the light of a setting sun. An awesome back drop to a spot of fishing for the humble and obliging flounder. Many thanks to Kyle Blackmore for allowing me to use his pictures. On light tackle flounder can give great sport and are ideal species for junior anglers to target over the coming half term. There is also every chance of a bass with a few good sized fish present.
