Troutmasters Results

Well done to everyone who took part in the Troutmasters competition on Sunday 14th April 2019. The competition took place over four hours and even with the freezing cold easterly wind the ten anglers that attended managed a rod average of 2.4 fish per angler, with several anglers heading back to Anchor lake to continue fishing after the match had ended. Best tactics throughout this colder spell have been to fish deeper and slower.

  1. Chris Short with 5 fish weighing 16lb 8oz
  2. Keith Ratcliffe with 4 fish weighing 11lb 12oz
  3. Philip Duckett with 3 fish weighing 10lb 12oz
  4. Mary Ratcliffe with 3 fish weighing 7lb 12oz

  5. Ben Cheeld with 3 fish weighing 6lb 4oz

  6. Richard Cooper with 2 fish weighing 5lb 8oz
  7. Mike Duckett with 2 fish weighing 5lb
  8. Sam Shepherd – Junior with 2 fish weighing 4lb 12oz

    9 -Terence O’Keefe

Bideford and District Angling Club Coarse Section Monthly Competition @ Tarka Swims George’s Lake Results

1st  Keith Copland 7lb 2oz

2nd Dean Siford 3lb 5oz

3rd Graham Currington 2lb 4oz

4th Martin Turner 1lb 13oz

5th Pete Slade 15oz,

16 fished this event in a bitter Easterly wind which appeared to switch the whole lake off . Leading up to this ,the first match of the year on Tarka ,most members were optimistic for a decent match. Keith was fishing his first match after an operation on his right wrist, he drew on the point peg F and fished a cage feeder with micros and red maggot for 2 nice bream late in the match to snatch victory from Dean Siford on the next peg who also found a nice bream and some roach on the tip.Third spot went to Graham Currington  who fished the pole and maggot around 8 metres on peg Q for a net of small silver fish. Martin Turner drew in the shallows on peg A and landed some small carp for 4th place.

Stafford Moor in fine Spring Form

posted in: Carp Fishing, Sidebar | 0

Stafford Moor continues to produce some stunning carp each week, so many I struggle to keep up with reports. Jo sent me these highlights from the past week.

(Below) Oil Dietrich who had 10 fish out up to 26lb 8oz  from the inlet swim on Beatties lake this weekend all caught on red alert by crafty baits.

(Below) A fine fish from Lodge Lake, Lee Rowe banked three fish out up to 27lb  from the dam wall  with son Kaiden, all fish were caught out in the open water on baitworks  and Mainline spicy crab boilies.

(Below) A really stunning common caught by Nathan England who fished on the summer hut swim on Beatties lake weighing 20lb 8oz.

Brace of two pound roach in Red Letter hour!!!

posted in: Coarse Fishing, Sidebar | 0

The below report from Ben Smeeth has to be one of the most spectacular I have reported on since starting North Devon Angling News three years ago. Two pound plus roach are few and far between in Devon now and many would see the capture of one as the fish of lifetime. It makes you wonder what else this large body of water on the Devon boarder has to offer? I believe he venue has the potential to produce a record perch, eel or even roach not mention those big brown trout.

Red Letter “hour”……..Milo & Bait-Tech sponsored angler Simon Poynter pleasure fished Lower Tamar recently, using it as practice for up and coming feeder matches.

“Lower Tamar Lake takes me back to my childhood, where the anticipation of the bite & what could be on the end, fills me with excitement and causes sleepless night’s before each visit” Simon added.

Simon fished a cage feeder at 72mtrs & a 60g window feeder at 92mtrs, targeting the lakes big bream.

Groundbait of choice was the new Bait-tech Pro Natural Bream Dark…… lovely smell & great mix.

Simon commented that as a match angler he feels that he does not approach Lower Tamar in the correct way for the specimen sized bream, feeling that most fish have gone nocturnal, possibly with a dawn and dusk approach being better than his usual 10am till 3pm sessions!

After 3 hours Simon had one 2lb brown trout to show for his efforts, his travelling partner had two trout at this point.

At 2pm Simon’s tip slammed around & after a very spirited fight he landed his first roach, it was a stunning fish of 2lb 3oz, “I could not believe it the size of it when it broke the surface” really chunky and scale perfect.

This started a crazy 50 minutes with Simon catching seven fish in as many casts, one 3lb brown trout and six other roach between 1lb 7oz and 2lb 6oz graced his net….. the roach were beautiful, indeed four of the seven roach were over 2lb.Even though one of the lakes massive bream failed to put in an appearance, the roach were a catch of a lifetime, caught in lovely surroundings.

Kind regards

Ben Smeeth

Cats on the prowl at Paradise

Congratulations to Tony Trenerry who caught a 55lb 3oz Catfish from  Day Ticket  Nirvana’s Specimen Cat Lake. The fish was tempted using good old luncheon meat.

Zenia at Anglers Paradise advises anglers that they should avoid holding the fish off the ground. “There’s no need to hold Cats but much better to position them like this or lying beside them on a unhooking mat.”

Exmoor Trout Fisheries for all.

The above full tailed rainbow trout was landed by Nick Hart who runs the nearby Exe Valley Fishery. Wimbleball and Exe Valley offer Fly Fishers visiting Exmoor an excellant choice of venues. The wide open expanse of Wimbleball offers the challenge of hard fighting fish in a stunning setting of moorland, woods and extensive farmland.

Exe Valley is situated in a sheltered valley beside the River Exe and offers fishing for both experienced anglers and families. Being slight less imposing Exe Valley is an ideal venue for those wanting to try trout fishing before venturing out to the wild expanse of Wimbleball.

Exe Valleys tranquil waters offer great sport.

Both fisheries offer catch and release options with stunning brown and rainbow trout.

River Taw salmon

Pete Tyjas who published Fly Culture Magazine tempted this beautiful springer from a middle Taw beat on a cascade. Whilst there have only been around half a dozen salmon from the Taw so far; as the water warms I expect a few more to be tempted.

Dave Mock caught his first ever salmon estimated at 8lb from the Barnstaple and District Angling Association Water below Newbridge.
